Dr. Elizabeth Mendenhall received her PhD in International Relations in 2017, and her faculty position is in the Department of Marine Affairs at the University of Rhode Island. Her main research focus is the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and associated institutions. Dr. Mendenhall's expertise concerns the relationship between regime design and scientific and technological change, and she is most interested in asking "when and why do global commons regimes work to achieve their goals?" Recent projects focus on marine plastic pollution, island-building, nuclear armed submarines, fisheries conflict, and the negotiations for a new 'Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction' treaty.
