Mr. John Pepper

Mr. John Pepper has over 40 years of experience working in the geospatial information industry, specializing in data collection and management; planning, policy and strategy as well as business development and marketing in the UK and overseas. He trained as a land surveyor at Ordnance Survey Great Britain (OSGB) and held several senior management positions in both OSGB and the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO). During his career in UK Government, he was responsible for developing new markets and applications for land mapping data as well as for hydrographic and oceanographic data.

Mr. Pepper joined OceanWise as a shareholder and Director of Marketing in 2010 during which time he managed relationships with UK and overseas Governments, private sector clients, commercial partners and re-sellers of OceanWise products and services in the ports and harbors; offshore energy and coastal management sectors. He was appointed Chairman in 2019. He is a qualified technical and management trainer providing expertise on marine data management and organizational change. He is an expert advisor to the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) providing capacity building training and mentoring in data management, database design and MSDI to IHO Member States and Regional Commissions across the world. He is a member of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC) Ocean Teacher program and a member of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) and a member of its Working Group for Marine Geospatial Information (WG-MGI).

Mr. Pepper holds professional qualifications in Surveying Science and Geodesy and postgraduate qualifications in Marketing and Strategic Planning. He is a Chartered Marketer with the Chartered Institute of Marketing and a past Chair of the Association of Geographic Information (AGI) in the UK.
