FAQ’s
Please contact Courtney Clark, AGS’ Manager of Sponsored Projects, at cclark@americangeo.org with your questions.
Do you recommend any hotels in particular? Are there group discounts available at nearby hotels?
Two hotels near the venue offer discounted rates for Symposium attendees, the Aloft Harlem (reserve by October 30th) and the Arthouse NYC (reserve by October 17th). These links will take you directly to the discounted reservation pages.
In the past, some Fellows have also chosen to share AirBnbs or hotel rooms with other Fellows, so that is another option, as well as any other hotel that you might prefer. Once we receive confirmation of attendance from all Fellows (deadline: October 5th), we will share a contact list so you can reach out to other Fellows about sharing an Airbnb or hotel, if you like.
What is the address of the venue?
The main Symposium sessions will take place at the following address:
Alfred J. Lerner Hall
Columbia University
2920 Broadway
New York, NY 10027
What should I ask my district to fund?
Your main expenses will be transportation and lodging, plus a few meals. These may include all or some of the following:
- A round trip flight, train ride, bus ride, or mileage to/from your residence to your accommodations in NYC
- If you are driving a vehicle to NYC, parking (contact your hotel or Airbnb for parking rates)
- Public transportation in NYC (bus and subway)
- Taxi or rideshare costs (click here for info about NYC taxi fares)
- Accommodation (hotel or Airbnb) for three nights (Wednesday-Friday night)
- Meals while you are traveling to and from NYC, and a few meals while you are in NYC
It may be helpful to share with your district the US Government's hotel and per diem allowances for New York City. These rates are calculated by the federal government's General Services Administration and are based on extensive research and calculations. Other organizations also use these rates as the basis for their own travel allowances. The government budgets $286 per night for lodging in NYC in November and $79 per day for meals and incidental expenses. We will provide you with breakfast and lunch on three days, plus evening receptions on two days that will include appetizers.
Breakdown of US government’s per diem allowance for NYC:
Breakfast: $18
Lunch: $20
Dinner: $36
Incidental expenses: $5
Total: $79
