Mr. Steve Canty

Mr. Steve Canty coordinates the Smithsonian Institution’s Marine Conservation Program and is a lead researcher within Working Land and Seascapes, a pan-institutional initiative. His research supports decision-making in the management and conservation of small-scale fisheries, coral reefs, mangroves and seagrasses, and the design and implementation of marine reserves. He has over 15+ years of working in the Mesoamerican reef ecoregion and was part of the team which led the development of the regional mangrove management, conservation, restoration and monitoring strategy. Ongoing research topics include the genetic connectivity of key fisheries and mangroves, sustainable small-scale fisheries, ecosystem restoration, and blue carbon.
